Stephen
Colbert last night lambasted 60 Minutes for its Benghazi coverage that resulted
in an apology: "CBS fact-checked the story, but when it turned out to be
wrong, they fact-checked it for realz, y'all," Colbert said. He then
discussed Lara Logan's apology "at the very top of the last minute of the
show." Given that CBS News "is good at journalism," the only
explanation, he said, is that "Hillary Clinton got to them."
Colbert
brought on his own "eyewitness" to set things straight—an eyewitness
who looked remarkably like actor Sam Waterston with a giant fake beard. He was
an intern at 60 Minutes during the report, Colbert explained. The witness said
he'd seen Hillary Clinton "swinging a bike chain" in the newsroom,
yelling, "We're here to kill this story! Who wants to eat some
chain?!" Then, he says, "she pistol-whipped Morley Safer." But
then the witness revealed his true identity: Charlie Skinner, from HBO's The
Newsroom, who launched into a tirade calling on newspeople to provide the
truth. Finally, Colbert offered up an apology of his own.
